Passing The CCNA and CCNP: Home Lab Shopping On Ebay
June 17, 2010, 5:34 amWhether you’re just getting ideas for your Cisco home lab or adding to your existing lab, ebay is a great place to get ideas for your lab as well as pick up some great bargains.
Of course, the internet being what it is, there are always going to be a few people looking to take your money while shipping you inferior merchandise, or worse, no merchandise at all. While these “dealers” are in the minority, you still need to be careful when purchasing Cisco equipment on ebay. In this article, I’ll give you several tips on browsing ebay ads for home lab ideas, and a few things to look out for when purchasing equipment on ebay.
For those of you just starting your Cisco certification pursuit, the idea of purchasing a home lab kit — a set of routers, switches, and perhaps some cables and study guides — seems like a good idea. Instead of putting your lab together one piece at a time, these kits allow you to get a head start on your studies.
One thing to watch out for in these kits is outdated equipment, or the inclusion of outdated study guides. Often, vendors will use these kits as a way to get rid of unwanted inventory.
The Cisco 1900 family of switches falls into this category. A recent search on ebay for “ccna lab” showed seven different CCNA lab kits that contained 1900 switches. The problem here is that the current CCNA exams do not test on the 1900 switches, which are menu-driven and do not have an IOS. You’ll need to be well-versed with switches that do have an IOS, such as the 2950s.
The plus side here is that you will probably save money by using 1900 switches. If you’re on a tight budget, having a 1900 switch is better than no switch at all. If at all possible, though, get a Cisco switch with an IOS.
The cables and transceivers included with these kits are generally exactly what you need to set up that particular kit, and this can be very helpful to those CCNA candidates who are new to the various cables needed to physically configure a home lab. Just make sure you’re not buying a kit with 10 transceivers (used on AUI ports) when you’ve only got two routers with Ethernet ports.
Watch out for kits that include outdated study guides. I’ve seen four-year-old CCNA books included with some kits. If you already have your study guides, feel free to ask the vendor how much the kit costs without the books.
That leads me to the most important point. Get to know the vendor before buying anything. Visit their website and check their ebay feedback. If buying from an individual as opposed to a reseller, find out what conditions the router or switch has been kept in, and make sure to define the terms under which they will accept returns.
There’s nothing wrong with buying equipment from someone who’s selling their CCNA/CCNP/CCIE home lab, but just make sure you ask the right questions first. Professional resellers generally have their return policy right in their ebay ad; if they don’t, ask for a copy.
Building your own CCNA and/or CCNP home lab is a little intimidating at first, but speaking as someone who has climbed the Cisco certification ladder from the CCNA to the CCIE, I can tell you that it is the best investment you can make in your career. Use a little caution, ask the right question, and soon you’ll be leaving the world of “router simulators” behind – and you’ll be developing your skills as a true professional should: On real Cisco routers and switches!

Man’s Restored Image
Author Offers Motivational Story Inspired by Basketball Legend Michael Jordan
LAUREL, MD. —- In her riveting new book, Man’s Restored Image (now available through AuthorHouse, Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble.com), Gloria Minatti depicts mankind in all its attributes – spiritually, mentally and physically.
The book announces humankind’s beginning and heralds it end. It leads humanity on a path never before walked due to people’s fears of the unknown and brings out the true authentic potential within every man and woman. Its conception was inspired greatly by the author’s personal and spiritual encounter with basketball legend Michael Jordan, whose strength, vitality and focus are major themes in the book.
In 1998, God revealed his destiny to Minatti, and from that unforgettable meeting, she was inspired to write this spiritual, motivational story, which encompasses innumerable aspects of God’s plan for humanity.
Man’s Restored Image provides a map for life’s journey and incorporates meditation and proper breathing as guides. Coming full circle, it depicts man’s beginning and exemplifies his gestation of life. Minatti leads readers into a maze of information and knowledge that catapults them into an entirely new dimension of living. By revealing God by His ways and not just His acts, the author shows that one can be religious without ever fully knowing God.
Minatti also writes that it is not the body that makes a man human, it is his spirit. “As God’s self-knowledge lies in the eternal Spirit, so man’s self-knowledge is by his own spirit, and his knowledge of God is by direct union of the Spirit of God with the spirit of man. I cannot overstress the importance of this in our forward walk into our destiny as sons of God,” Minatti writes.
Minatti has ministered all over the United States and in March began her 2004 worldwide tour in the Philippines. She has taught classes on healing, prayer, praise and worship, Christian meditation and Spiritual studies. She is the founder of the Beyond the Veil newsletter, which is circulated monthly around the world, and also founder and president of Man’s Restored Image Ministries Inc.
The author resides in Laurel, Md., with her two sons. Recently widowed, she has reached hundreds with her ministry, declaring that God is a healer of all infirmities.
About the Author
She is founder of Beyond the Veil Newsletter distributed around the world, also Founder of Man’s Restored Image Ministries Inc.. She is an ordained minister with 18 years of experience in spiritual studies. Ms. Minatti’s spiritual journey directed her to minister to basketball legend/entrepreneur Michael Jordan. 12 Reasons You Should Learn to Play the Piano
June 1, 2010, 4:05 amAll right, folks, here you go: My 12 reasons why you should start learning how to play the piano. Immediately. As in today. This very minute.
Okay, fine, finish this article first, THEN get started. And yes, I know that there are more than just 12 reasons to play the piano. But I happen to like the number 12.
1) Everyone should play at least one instrument. I truly believe that. Every person on Earth should be able to sit at SOME instrument and be capable of making beautiful music.
2) Playing the piano makes you feel (and look) sophisticated. Truly. No matter who you are or how many warts you have, you’ll just exude class the second you begin tickling those ivories.
3) Piano playing keeps your brain active. It’s very hard for your brain to rot when you consistently throw it the musical language to interpret.
4) You won’t run out of things to do when you’re bored. There’s always a new way to play, always a new approach to playing, and always, always, ALWAYS a new song to learn. (See number 8.)
5) Family members can live vicariously through you. I’m semi-serious about that. The reason I began taking piano lessons (back when I was 10) was because of grandparents who didn’t play, and over the years I’ve had numerous relatives enjoy playing through me. (I live to serve.)
6) People will automatically assume you’re a genius. Honestly, I’ve heard this a lot. People uttering “He/she plays the piano” in the same tone reserved for “He/she has an IQ of 174.” You just can’t help but admire someone playing an instrument.
7) Piano playing is good for your hands. Indeed it is. I probably have stronger hands/fingers than most people I know. And have you ever noticed the hands of a pianist? Beautiful, long, tapered fingers. Chances are that if you’ve ever admired someone’s hands, they play the piano.
Pianists never quit learning. There’s absolutely no way to memorize every musical piece on earth. You could learn 10 new songs a day for the rest of your life without scratching the surface of songs out there.
9) Piano playing is FUN. Really. It’s one of the funnest things I do. Think about it, why would so many of us do it if it weren’t a blast?
10) Deep down, everyone wishes they played the piano. Have you ever read other people’s New Year’s Resolutions lists? If you haven’t, then you’re just not nosy like me. No, seriously, if you haven’t, I’ll tell you which wish consistently pops up: “Learn to play the piano.”
11) Piano playing is SATISFYING. It’s truly one of the most satisfying things you can do. (Right after touching your nose with your tongue. Or so I hear.) There’s no feeling like playing a difficult song and playing it flawlessly. Quite an ego-boost.
12) Everyone loves a musician. ‘Nuff said.

Protecting Your Home and Family in the Event of Theft or Accidents
May 22, 2010, 10:05 pmContemporary life is represented through consumption, we consume new products every day and methodically change unfashionable household items, merchandise and vehicles with upgraded versions and models. Satisfying an existence distinguished by the most recent inventions and electronics in our houses, a new model of car as well as the most fashionable range of outfits means that we have a substantial amount of our hard earned money invested in things that we delight in. Moreover, economic appreciation continues to affect the rising value of expert guidance and everyday living, which makes it significantly more essential than ever to seriously envisage the future along with any probable disasters.
It is not a case of being worried, instead it is an approach of realisation and acknowledging that every now and then disasters come to pass. Take a minute to consider that following possibilities along with how they would potentially change your life. What would you do if the esteemed family dog developed a potentially fatal illness. Your beloved, recently refurbished family home tragically suffered severe fire damage desolating everything inside, along with your recently acquired furniture suite and big screen television. Consider what your family would do if you got hit by a motorbike while crossing the street, leaving you paralysed. While these aren’t warm prospects and we commonly try to avoid thinking about them, the potential for them occurring, or a similar incident entails that we think about how to minimise the damage of such events.
These speculative possible scenarios symbolise the relevance of having an insurance portfolio to insure the pieces of you and your family’s style of living that you could not stand to loose, or replace. Each family will have differing insurance requirements relative to their living requirements, financial standing and their specific preference in home consumables. Pet enthusiasts would potentially benefit from pet assurance in the case of the need for a veterinary surgery. A family could have the resources to survive if an unthinkable ill-fortune left the main financial supporter ineffectual. Home valuables and car cover would enable the family to substitute the constituents of your home, or the family vehicle in the instance of theft or accidental damage. Life assurance is even more important in the case of single earning families as the loss of income would likely devastate their ability to get by.
A nice place to start when you are thinking about an assurance policy plan is by consulting an insurance or financial adviser, a cost that is warranted by insurance that is personalised to suit your personal requirements. With your requisites in mind it’s then a fantastic time to look around for quotes from prospective assurance providers and deciding on products that best suits you.

Pick The Private Aeroplane That Is Right For Your Particular Needs
April 23, 2010, 12:50 amObtaining a private aeroplane is a massive venture, and one that demands a substantial amount of thought and contemplation in order to make sure you acquire the best plane for you and your specific business requirements.
The first thing you ought to look into is the specific needs of individuals who will be principally using the aircraft. If it is merely for personal trips, then a smaller aircraft such as the Hawker 400XP would be more ideal, whilst, if the private aircraft is going to be used by a company, then a rather larger jet such as the Gulfstream G550 might possibly be much more appropriate.
Choosing the correct size plane is critical because you don’t want the maintenance and personnel costs of a big jet when it is possible to be only used by just a small number of individuals at a time, nor do you want to acquire a small plane and then find out that you need to fly a big number of clients.
Equally, you must carefully consider where the aeroplane will be going on a normal basis. By and large smaller private jets are more fitting for short business meetings, like that of London to Paris whilst larger private aeroplanes like the Gulfstream G550 can fly from Manchester to New York.
Although, taking all your future needs into consideration is more complicated. By and large you will find that one trip will only require a small aircraft, whereas the following business meeting may need a much bigger plane that has a longer distance.
Because of this, it’s normally sensible to choose a fractional ownership scheme that offers you access to a whole fleet of aircraft of differing sizes and ranges, therefore allowing you choose the aeroplane that is right for you and your journey. With this in mind, whether you simply need a small private plane for a short trip or a somewhat larger aircraft which you could have a client meeting on, there’s always a jet to be had that will suit your requirements. Visit the leading companies online for more information on aircraft leasing and flying privately.
This flexible new air charter service also means that you only have to pay for the actual hours that you need; so you don’t have to worry about expensive maintenance and personnel outlays, helping you to get the most out of your investment.

Push Email
March 23, 2010, 6:39 pmThere’s a lot of hype at the moment about push email technology. New cell phone handsets are beginning to support the technology and it seems to be getting its head into other areas of the market too. This could be the next big thing in the telecommunications industry and the speculation is heating up about who are going to be the major players involved.
Right now there are at least five major operators in this market and surely this will be reduced in the near future. Most experts say that there are simply too many of them fighting over the same space.
Right now both Visto and Seven have been keen to show their commitment to this technology. These are following the lead set by Canadian firm RIM (Research In Motion) who brought the technology into the spotlight with their Blackberry device. While so far they have been concentrating on supplying hardware, they have stated that they will be moving into the supply of software instead in the near future.
The wave of consolidations has already begun. British vendor Comtag was acquired by Smartner who in turn was acquired by Seven; moving in parallel with this, Visto acquired Psion Software. It looks like the heat is turning up in the race to capture this market. Both Visto and Seven show no sign of flagging as they continue to increase the number of operators they can lay claim to, as well as increasing the number of handsets and other supported devices they are marketing. Seven has also added a useful security feature which allows you to send a special message to your device which will delete all the messages it currently has stored. This could be lifesaving if you left your handset in a public place.
Good Technology was somewhat shielded in its area by supporting Palm and Windows devices but now there is the new Windows Mobile based Treos to contend with.
So what is Microsoft’s reaction to all of this? Well, they appear to be gearing up to enter the market. In his blog, Microsoft senior technology specialist, Harold Wong has reported that the company is getting ready to release its ‘Community Technology Preview’ build of Exchange Server 2003, Service pack 2. And this is not the only step the giant is taking. In June 2005, Intellisync announced a new service that would allow subscribers to receive push email on Windows Mobile, Palm OS and Symbian devices.
While, of the current estimated 4 million push email subscribers, most seem to be using RIM Blackberry devices, this assault will be difficult to bare much longer.
On the technical side, there are two basic technologies that can provide push email solutions:
* one technology is true push;
* the other has a push effect using synchronization.
While the users will not notice a significant difference when they log in to check their mail, the costs vary to a considerable extent with true push technologies offering a far cheaper monthly cost to the user. While Intellisync is currently using a SyncML or synchronization technology to serve its customers, RIM and Microsoft are using their own proprietary systems. The system that has found favour both with Vodafone, the world’s largest network operator, and Rogers, the first operator to deploy Blackberry devices is the solution that Visto opted for also. This is best described as a Proprietary + RTP/RTSP system and Visto calls it ConstantSync. It effectively relies on a real time streaming protocol to deliver email over mobile networks.
Whatever the technicalities behind the networks, there is a lot to play for in this emerging market and we’ll have to wait and see whose technology and handheld devices carry the most favour with customers. All have relative advantages and disadvantages both in terms of technology and market strategy and it all really is still to play for.

Microsoft Word Is Great But I Wish I Could…
March 23, 2010, 6:49 amMicrosoft Word is all singing, all dancing. Truly a great product which has made the lives of professional writers and students vastly more productive.
Most of us however are not professional writers. We only use Word to type an occasional missive or and article now and then. We don’t need or use 90% of the bells and whistles. Unfortunately, some of these built in bells and whistles are designed to impose themselves and often like to blow loudly in our ears whether we asked for it or not.
Research shows there are three common pet hate ‘features’ that most average users would rather turn off if only they knew how. This is a cheat sheet for such users.
A. How do I stop Word from helping me type?
Word checks spelling and grammar as you type. When these features are on, spelling and grammar that Word does not recognize are underlined sternly with wavy red and green lines.
To turn off Word’s various automatic checking features:
1. From the Tools menu, pick ‘AutoCorrect’ (or AutoCorrect Options). Then click on the ‘AutoCorrect’ tab.
2. Uncheck the boxes for the AutoCorrect items that you want to disable.
3. Do the same on the ‘AutoFormat As You Type’ tab.
4. On the ‘AutoText’ tab, uncheck the ‘Show AutoComplete tip’ box.
5. From the Tools menu, pick ‘Options’ then click on the tabs and uncheck any boxes for features that you want to disable.
B. How do I tell the Office Assistant to go take a walk?
1. Click on the Office Assistant, then click on ‘Options’.
2. Uncheck the ‘Use Office Assistant’ box.
You can also customize the behavior of the Office Assistant by checking or clearing the checkboxes on the ‘Options’ tab.
If you later decide that you rather miss the lovable Assistant, you can easily bring him back by choosing ‘Show the Office Assistant’ from the Help menu.
C. How do I turn off the automatic URLs?
Word likes to convert all URLs and email addresses in your document into active hyperlinks. If you’d rather not, then here’s how to turn off that feature:
1. From the Tools menu, Choose ‘AutoCorrect’ (or AutoCorrect Options)
2. Click on ‘AutoFormat As You Type’ tab.
3. Under ‘Replace As You Type’, uncheck the ‘Internet and network paths with hyperlink’ box.
Note that this setting only applies to what you subsequently type. If you forgot to turn off AutoCorrect before you started and you end up with a document full of hyperlinks that you don’t want, you can disable them, either one at a time, or all at once. To turn a link off, right-click on the link, select ‘Hyperlink’ from the pop-up menu, and then select ‘Remove Hyperlink’. To remove all links from the document, choose Select All from the Edit menu or press [Ctrl]+[A], and then press [Ctrl]+[6] to remove all hyperlinks.
Most Word features can be turned off or on from the ‘Tools’ menu. From this menu, the ‘Options’ command brings up a screen with several tabs where you can make all sorts of changes to Word’s behavior. The ‘Customize’ command lets you to change Word’s menus and toolbars.
The ‘View’ menu also has some great options for changing the look of the Word screen.
