The Heart of a Mother – Mother’s Day Special

August 29, 2008, 11:45 pm

“The heart of a mother is a place to call home. Mom means security, trust, care, and unconditional love.”
-Emily Rose

Motherhood, it is selfless, hard work that in the end results in the formation of a beautiful life. Each day mothers pour out themselves to their young ones and pray that they are growing up healthy and happy. Days form weeks, weeks form years, years add onto years breathing life into a child.

They capture each moment in memory, picture, or poem. Days are filled with silly songs, t’ball games, piano recitals, homework, diapers, birthday parties, and school dances. They spend many sleepless nights worrying when the curfew has come and gone or pace the emergency room floor after a bicycle accident. They fill stockings and Easter baskets at midnight. They run here and there between soccer practice and study groups, ballet and daycare. Countless hours are spent repeating spelling words and creating planet mobiles. Dinner is on the table and popcorn and movies await happy faces. Small tiny things are done, barely noticed, but given with great care. The “thank you’s” may be few and far between.

One day their once tiny newborns grow wings and leave the nest. The sweetest thing is when those children return and they find that they are now not just your children, but close friends. The cycle continues when those children have children of their own and learn what their mother had so selflessly and sweetly done over those many years. A mom puts down her life to raise her children to help them reach dreams, achieve goals, be joyful, and have good character.

As mother day approaches it is the perfect time to ponder the meaning of motherhood and give thought to how you have been blessed with your mother, grandmother, or special lady in your life. If you have been touched by a mother, whether she is yours or someone in that role, let them feel the deep appreciation for what they have done. Choose a special flower, card, or gift to present to your mother symbolizing how honored and privileged you have been to have her in your life. Give her a special bouquet of roses meaning that her love was as fragrant and beautiful as the arrangement, or a personalized bracelet or monogrammed pendant she can wear in daily remembrance of how she has forever imprinted your life with love.

Jewelry As A Father’s Day Gift

August 29, 2008, 3:06 pm

It is widely known that many men enjoy fine jewelry. So, why not present Dad with a gift of jewelry this Father’s Day.

Jewelry gifts that you might consider for that special Father in your life could include a gold or silver watch, a handsome sterling silver or 14kt gold chain or masculine link bracelet. With a chain you might include a manly pendant with a nautical or sports theme.

As for rings, there are many rugged designs available in 14kt gold or sterling silver with stones like turquoise, onyx, malachite and lapis. Also, many men are fond of masculine settings of small diamonds and other gemstones.

Celtic jewelry designs, such as Celtic crosses, Celtic knots, etc… are great choices for Dad on Father’s Day.

If your Dad has a pierced ear maybe he would appreciate a small stud earring; the choices here are endless.

Remember this, men tend to avoid interchanging jewelry in the way that many women do. With this in mind, avoid costume jewelry and focus on durable quality pieces that Dad can wear day in and day out.

The following are some tips for buying jewelry for Dad on Father’s Day. He will be proud of you for being a smart jewelry consumer and for saving some money, too.

Here are some helpful guidelines to keep in mind when you are shopping for a jewelry gift to celebrate the next chapter of your special Father’s life.

1. There’s a big difference between 14 karat gold and gold-plated jewelry. Fourteen karat (14K) jewelry contains 14 parts of gold, mixed in throughout with 10 parts of base metal. Gold-plated describes jewelry with a layer of at least 10K gold bonded to a base metal. Gold plating eventually wears away, depending on how often the item is worn and how thick the plating is.

2. If you’re buying a watch, determine whether you want one that runs on a battery or one that must be wound daily. Ask if a warranty or guarantee is included, how long it lasts, and what parts and repair problems it covers. Also ask how and where you can get the watch serviced and repaired.

3. Know the difference between laboratory-created gemstones and naturally mined stones. Stones created in the lab are visually identical to stones mined from the earth. The big difference is in the cost: laboratory-created stones are less expensive then naturally mined stones. But because they look much like stones mined from the earth, they must be identified as lab-created. If you want a naturally mined stone, ask if it has been treated. Gemstone treatments- such as heating, dyeing or bleaching- can improve a stone’s appearance or durability. Some treatments are permanent; some may create special care requirements. Treatments also may affect the stone’s value.

4. When you’re buying a diamond, consider four criteria: cut, color, clarity and weight, usually stated as carats. Each factor affects the price. Color is sometimes “graded” on a scale. However, scales are not uniform: a “D” may be the best color for one scale, but not for another. Make sure you know how a particular scale and grade represent the color of the diamond you’re considering. A diamond can be described as “flawless” only if it has no visible surface cracks or other imperfections when viewed under 10-power magnification by a skilled diamond grader.

When shopping for Father’s Day jewelry online, apply these tips.

1. Shop with companies you know or do some homework before buying to make sure a company is legitimate before doing business with it.

2. Take advantage of information and referrals from an Internet company you have come to trust.

3. Get the details about the product, as well as the merchant’s refund and return policies, before you buy.

4. Look for an address to write to or a phone number to call if you have a question, a problem or need help.

Beware of Holiday Goodies Not So Good for Your Pets

August 28, 2008, 9:37 pm

The holidays mean lots of rich and fatty foods for most people. Who can resist… candy, cookies, fudge, egg nog, pumpkin pie, not to mention the home cooked meals and family togetherness? It’s part of the spirit of the season. While we may not be able to resist the urge to overindulge ourselves, we can and should resist the urge to overindulge our pets. Let’s face it, we all sneak a little table treat to our pets every now and then. It’s hard to say no to those wanting eyes. And, the excited look on their little face when they realize they are getting a treat is priceless. But, tread lightly down this path!!

For one, animals have a very short span of contentment. Their contented state lasts long enough for them to swallow the last bite. Then, those wanting eyes are right back in your face, watching your every move… expecting… hoping… guilting … If you head down this path, be prepared to deal with it every single time you sit down for dinner.

But, the annoyance of a begging animal is just a minor problem. The bigger problem is that table scraps can lead to indigestion, upset tummies, vomiting and diarrhea. Pets have a very sensitive system. Upsetting the balance of that system can cause them all kinds of health problems. Table scraps can also be high in fat and sugar, which can lead to weight problems, heart problems, and diabetes.

So, What are the Best Types of Treats?

Treats that contain wholesome, natural ingredients are a great alternative for keeping your pets healthy and happy. Consider treats that work to improve the overall health of your pets. There are many out there that promote dental health, assist with achy joints, are high in antioxidants, or vitamin enriched. Some great ones to try are HealthyPetNet’s Gourmet Dental Treats and Antioxidant Health Bars
found at Your Pet’s Life

Your pets will love these treats and never know the difference!

Sunshine Can Save Money

August 23, 2008, 6:24 am

When energy prices were low, it was unnecessary to justify the upfront investment of money required to install photovoltaic equipment, solar water heaters and similar equipment. The reason was simple to understand – it would simply take too long to recoup the cost of the equipment in the form of lower energy bills.

Things have changed though. As energy prices continue to go up, the amount of time required to recoup the upfront cost goes down. In addition, a number of state and local tax incentives make it even easier for homeowners to go solar and save money right away.

Photovoltaic systems have also come a long way. The costs of installing solar panels is still high, with a typical two kilowatt installation of solar panels from OVR Solar costing about £10,000 / ($20, 000) in most cases, but special tax incentives and long term energy savings can help homeowners recoup those upfront costs faster than ever before.

Governments around the world are increasingly willing to help. This tax savings can help eligible homeowners recoup some of the costs of installing solar panels and solar water heating systems up front, in addition to the energy savings they will enjoy down the road.

Many states also provide special tax incentives for homeowners who install eligible solar panel and solar water heating systems. The specifics of these tax rebates and tax incentives vary from state to state, but many states provide at least some level of tax relief for homeowners who install and use energy efficient systems.

Breakeven point for your outlay may seem far away at todays prices – but what about at tomorrows?. However, as the prices for heating oil, gas and other forms of traditional energy continue to soar, so will demand for alternatives

Driving Up And Down Hills in a mobile detailing rig

August 21, 2008, 6:49 am

When you are going down hills don’t coast unless you are really low on gas. Save your brake pads/shoes. Use the lower gears to keep your speed down. This will help you stop more quickly. Remember if your get into an accident in a work truck you are already considered at fault since you should know better. Stay alert, pay attention and please think about that. In addition to using low gears to keep speed under control and save on brake pads, you should remember:

Your vehicle weight shifts forward

Your gas gauge reads lower

You’ll tip over if you make abrupt turns

It takes 30-40% more distance to stop

Your maneuvering ability is reduced

If you are towing a trailer be careful if the roadway is wet it would be very easy to jack knife. Remember when driving a mobile auto detailing van, pick up or truck, car or SUV with a trailer that your vehicle is much harder to stop when full of water. Water weighs 8.2 pounds per gallon. Since most auto detailers carry one hundred to two-hundred gallons of water this adds significant weight. Lets look at this; Two hundred gallons of water will weigh eight point two pounds per gallon. This means you have an additional sixteen hundred and forty pounds of total extra weight. That is a lot of mass to stop, not to mention the motion/movement problem when stopping and turning. Sixteen hundred and forty pounds (1,640 lbs) is between 20 to 40 percent of the gross vehicle weight of your entire rig. Think about this and take it easy on those hills.

When going up hills, try not to stop. If you can, maintain a steady speed in a low gear. If you have to stop on a hill, don’t feather the clutch more than you have to. It takes a day to fix if you burn it up. Your truck or mobile rig uses a lot of gas going up hills and at these prices you are better off to save the money. It’s better to use a lower gear and slow down than blast up the hills.

Be safe, save the vehicle from unnecessary wear and tear and think about it.

Step by Step Guide to Setting up a New WHM cPanel Server for Web Hosting Accounts

August 21, 2008, 6:32 am

This is a guide to setting up a new WHM/cPanel Server to be used for web hosting accounts. It is intended for web hosting company administrators and dedicated server owners. For under $99 per month, it is easier than ever to manage and run your own dedicated server. You can have guaranteed uptime from your datacenter, and outsourced support starting at $30/month. All you need to do is set up the server and get going. Whether it is for a web hosting company or a couple of personal websites, an inexpensive linux server is powerful, reliable, and easy to setup.

WebHostManager(WHM) is a common linux based tool for managing websites on a server. cPanel is a common control panel to manage an individual website. It allows you to add email accounts, view stats, make backups, install programs, etc. These 2 tools are the most inexpensive set used commonly to manage hosting accounts, and you will find them very prevalent in the budget shared hosting world. It usually adds about $20/month to the cost of a dedicated server but provides most of the features of the more expensive tools.

Whenever you order a dedicated server from a datacenter, you will receive a welcome email with details of the server including the server name, ip addresses, and root password. This information will allow you to setup and configure WHM so that you can host websites and use your own custom Domain Nameserver instead of a raw IP address.

The first thing you need to do is the setup of WebHostManager(WHM). This includes configuring the default Domain nameservers, main IP address, and server contact email address.

1) Login to root WHM (http://:2086)
2) In the left margin, click Next to run the setup wizard
3) Agree to the end-user license agreement
4) Edit setup
a. Server contact email address: info@yourdomain.com
b. Default Cpanel theme: x
c. Default home directory: /home
d. Home directory prefix: home
e. Main shared virtual host IP: xx.xxx.xxx.xx (should be main IP of server)
f. Hostname: server.yourserver.com
g. Primary nameserver: dns1.yourserver.com
h. Secondary nameservers: dns2.yourserver.com
i. Leave everything else unchanged
j. Click Save

Next, you need to setup the system quota. To do this follow these instructions:
5) Click Next Step in left margin – system sets up initial quota. No need to wait for initial quota to setup….Click Next Step again
6) DO NOT enable namesever. Click Next Step again

Now we need to setup the Resolver. This is specific to your datacenter and the information will be provided in the Welcome details for your dedicated server.
7) Resolver setup:
a. Click Continue
b. Primary Resolver: xx.xx.xx.xx (this is datacenter specific)
c. Secondary Resolver: xx.xx.xx.xx (this is datacenter specific)
d. Tertiary Resolver: leave blank
e. Click Continue
f. Click Next Step
8) Not necessary to enter a MySQL root password
9) Click Finish

Initial setup is done, and you should now be able to login to root WHM. Now you can create the accounts needed to setup the nameservers that you want to use on this dedicated server.
1) Login to root WHM again
2) “Create a New Account” (this is to be the main account: yourserver.com). Do not give this account a dedicated IP…. It will use the main server’s shared IP address.
3) Under “IP Functions”, click “Show IP address usage”. If only the main server IP is listed, that means you have to add the additional IP address to the server. Click “Add a New IP address”, and enter: xx.xx.xx.xx-xx Leave subnet mask unchanged, and click “Do It”
4) Click Show/Edit Reserved IPs, and check an IP to reserve it, and enter a reason (i.e. dns2.yourserver.com)
5) Under “DNS Functions” click “Edit DNS Zone”, then select yourserver.com and click “Edit”. Use the main IP address for the first 2 lines and the next IP address assigned to the server for the third line.
a. Under “Add new entries below this line”, enter:
server 14400 IN A xx.xx.xx.xx (leave far right box blank)
dns1 14400 IN A xx.xx.xx.xx (leave far right box blank)
dns2 14400 IN A xx.xx.xx.xx (leave far right box blank)
b. Note: The above entries are DNS entries for the two nameservers being created, and the sever name dana.hostyourself.com. Once you’ve enter the three entries, click “Save”
6) If you get an “Error reloading BIND” error, go to “Restart Services” and click “DNS Server (BIND)”, then click YES to restart Bind.

That’s it! Now the server is all setup and ready to host cPanel hosting account with the nameservers dns1.yourserver.com and dns2.yourserver.com. Of course you still need to go to your registrar and register these 2 new nameservers and wait for normal propagation of 24-48 hours until the new nameservers will work.

If this is a server being setup for a dedicated customer, be sure to tell them:
1) IP addresses of nameservers so he can register them with his registrar
2) Root login information
3) Login info of main account you created for him
4) Tell him NOT to delete the main account, since doing so will also delete the DNS zones you setup above
5) New DNS zones should be added to the old server to help with DNS propagation.

If you follow these simple instructions once you get your server from the datacenter, then you will be ready to load websites and hit the internet. With cheap outsourced support companies available and world class datacenters providing under $99 servers there is no reason not to tackle the world of dedicated servers and web hosting for yourself.

Are Military Tribunals Fair?

August 16, 2008, 1:06 am

What is a tribunal?

Here is a definition from http://www.answers.com/tribunal&r=67:

1. A seat or court of justice.

2. The bench on which a judge or other presiding officer sits in court.

3. A committee or board appointed to adjudicate in a particular matter.

4. Something that has the power to determine or judge: the tribunal of public opinion.

Sometimes a jury trial, especially a famous trial like the O. J. Simpson fiasco, is called a tribunal. That is not what we are talking about here. We are talking about a military tribunal such as the one that judged the Nazi war criminals at Nuremberg.

Military tribunals are not designed to be fair, although, depending on the participants, they may be more effective and based on more facts than a jury trial. They are used under special conditions such as the Lincoln assassination. President Bush initiated them to judge terrorist.

The normal protections of a jury system are not part of a military tribunal. Here are some of the conditions that I think tribunals (and I haven’t checked with my lawyer son) are used instead of the regular court system:

Military Trials

There is a Uniform Code of Military Justice to be followed in such tribunals. From my experience, military trials are conducted by officers who have good knowledge of what occurred. They are tough but usually fair from my experience in the military. (The GI prosecuted seldom thinks the trial was fair.)

Emergency and Urgent Situations

Such as was the case with the Lincoln assassination. The government wanted to round up all the conspirators to stop further acts of terrorism. The public wanted the perpetrators punished.

Situations Where Evidence May be Sparse:

Such as with our current situation with terrorist.

For example, a group of terrorist was gathered up in Afghanistan by the military. They were probably held because of their associations together, real or imagined.

To gather evidence against each one of these characters would be very difficult.

There would not be evidence to convict them of a particular terrorist act.

That is the key, isn’t it?

A military tribunal can decide which participants were part of a particular undesirable group and mete out punishment accordingly, something perhaps that could never be achieved in a jury trial. Guilt by association is not condoned by most folks I know.

History continues to look back on tribunals. The doctor that treated John Wilkes Booth after the Lincoln association is one held by historians to be a person who was judged too harshly. The doctor evidently knew nothing of the assassination when he treated the murderer, Booth.

I think a tribunal formed in haste, which is not given the time required to gather evidence and make good judgments, is a big danger to those being prosecuted.

Let’s be glad that the current administration has not been hasty about putting judgment on those gathered up as terrorist. Through due process some of the “terrorist” have been released. Others must wait their fate.

Well, maybe that is fair.

I believe the Supreme Court said the current process is suitable for the current situation.

The End

Tribunal. Lincoln, Bush, Afghanistan, Nuremberg, Military, Uniform Code of Military Justice, O. J. Simpson, Supreme Court

Poker as a Psychotherapy

August 14, 2008, 2:16 pm

So you sleep through the alarm clock and then try to rush out the door meanwhile managing to get in a fight with your significant other. When you finally make it outside, the neighbor’s dog is doing its business right on the side of your car, and while you try to shoo it away your morning cup of coffee spills everywhere. We’ve all been there, one of those mornings when nothing seems to be going your way. When you get home at the end of the day there seems to be little that you want to do besides mope around, feeling sorry for yourself.

Well, let me suggest something new to try. How about a game of online poker – I promise you, it will work like therapy. You will become so engrossed with the game, all the unlucky events of you day will be forgotten. Also, what can be more convenient than playing right at home? You can sit in your favorite chair, munch on your favorite snack and listen to your favorite music- you get my gist. The more involved you get in the game, the faster you will let go of all your frustrations. Online poker is fun, exciting, and best of all it’s like having a free therapy session in the comfort of your own home!

Coming to a Car Dealer Near You!

August 14, 2008, 5:08 am

The 2006 cars are fresh in dealer showrooms and already talk is raging about several upcoming cars set for release in model year 2007 or later. The styles are great, the engineering is advanced, and you simply haven’t seen anything yet. Let’s take a peak at what is coming down the pike. One of these future cars just may be what you end up driving!

Hyundai Equus – Can you say, V8 Hyundai? That’s right, the Equus which is already sold in Korea, may make its debut here in North America as a 2008 model. Reports have it that the car, which is larger than the Sonata, will be a rear wheel drive four door sedan outfitted with wood, leather, and all the latest electronic gadgetry.

Saturn Outlook – Things are certainly changing for Saturn, now that GM has killed off the Oldsmobile division. Still trying to find its footing amongst Chevrolet, Pontiac, Buick, and Cadillac, the division will get its first big crossover vehicle when the 8 passenger Outlook debuts as a 2007 model. Look for V6 power standard with the first Saturn equipped V8 as an option.

Ford Edge – If a Ford model starts with an “E” it likely is an SUV. The Edge is an SUV and it isn’t an SUV. More of a crossover vehicle, the 2007 Edge will be based on the Ford Fusion which borrows its platform from the Mazda 6. Positioned between the Escape and the Explorer, the Edge is meant to be Ford’s answer to other car based people movers including the Honda Pilot and the Toyota Highlander.

Volvo C30 – Can you say, subcompact Volvo? Yes, it is true: Volvo will be introducing the C30, a three door hatchback coupe. Some eight inches shorter than the compact S40, the car will run on a small inline four and it may be the first Volvo to have an optional hybrid engine. The C30 is to debut as a 2007 model.

Chevrolet Sport Wagon – GM’s purchase of Daewoo is having some positive side effects in the development of the 2008 Sport Wagon. A joint Daewoo-Chevrolet venture, this five seat model will be a crossover vehicle and share some components with Chevy’s larger Equinox. Planned as a world car, the Sport Wagon is likely to wear Daewoo, Chevrolet, Suzuki, and Opel nameplates.

Are you excited yet? If not, there are hundreds of additional models on the drawing boards and concept cars on display at an auto show near you. Hang on, change is in the air and you haven’t seen anything yet!

Identity Thieves Love US Medicare Cards

August 13, 2008, 2:01 pm

Democrat Senator Chuck Schumer and several Senate Finance Committee members have been campaigning for a bipartisan bill that would discontinue the issuing of Medicare cards bearing Social Security numbers. To the lawmakers, standard Medicare identification cards printed with the numbers leave seniors and handicapped beneficiaries highly vulnerable to identity theft.

For their part, Medicare employees balk at such proposal, which requires $500 million to put into action. Medicare also argues that there is not much proof surrounding the prevalence of identity theft exploiting the cards. This insinuation belies a caveat by the Social Security Administration itself, as well as a report released by the Government Accountability Office.

Medicare wants a hint. Clearly it hasn’t heard of MySpace or Friendster, with which one could craft a persona by just filling out a few blanks. Or job search websites, whose repository of resumes and CVs is vulnerable. Why, one could even buy somebody else’s birth certificate! Or it could be as simple as rummaging through another’s trash for a Visa receipt.

Identity theft and pretexting has important ramifications. It’s something everybody should reckon with and pass laws for lest a beautiful stranger denies somebody of a loan or maxes out a credit card. A Social Security number alone can let somebody make off with another’s bank account. Other times, victims are unwittingly subscribed to reputation-tarnishing sites.

Adolescence was spent groping for an identity. People should enter old age keeping this hard-won thing intact and theirs to keep.
