Las Vegas – The Entertainment Capital

October 31, 2008, 8:44 am

In my opinion, the Las Vegas area is one of the nicest places in the Western US and falling in love with Las Vegas is easy to do. This town is “The Entertainment Capital of the World” the city welcomes 37.5 million people a year. Visitors love to enjoy dazzling shows, five star hotels, first rate nightclubs, unique shopping experiences, world class gaming, and plenty of Las Vegas coupons.
There is a lot to see and do besides gambling: You can rent a car and visit the desert sights, such as Red Rock Canyon and Valley of Fire. A drive from Vegas to Valley of Fire is about 1 hour and you can return via Hoover Dam. This makes for a nice 1/2 to 1 day trip, depending on how long you want to spend in the Valley or at the Dam. There’s Lake Mead, with boat rentals, picnic areas, etc. They also offer raft trips down the Colorado River. Mt. Charleston offers cooler weather, horseback riding, picnic areas, camping, etc. As far as shopping, there are three discount outlet malls in Vegas plus several shopping malls. The Fashion Place Mall is huge, and is on the strip as well as the shopping at Caesars Palace and the huge shopping at Aladdin’s mall. Las Vegas has excellent restaurants, golf, hot air balloon rides and other outdoor activities. And if you’re into theme parks, some great rides are available right on the Strip. If you want to stay at hotels with limited gambling, try Lake Las Vegas… just 20 minutes from the Strip but worlds apart.
There is also a lot of cheap entertainment. Look in the local newspaper ads for two for one coupons and also go to the promotion desks at the hotels, ask if they are giving any comp tickets. Rio does all the time! Have a great time! Goto our web site http://www.whynotvegas.com, use the contact us link and let us know who your trip went.

Interesting 5 Tips that First-Timer Cruisers Need to Know

October 30, 2008, 9:30 pm

First-time cruisers sometimes confuse about choosing the destination
for neither cruising nor they aware about the hidden costs in the
cruise. So this cruising tip should help them to prepare about what
they need to know before they go for cruising:

1. Book early or late
You will get better deal by booking well in advance of your sailing
date or at the last minute. Booking early in advance can save you
between 15 to 50 percent and also lock in the cabin category of your
choice. If you rather wait to book at the last minute, you will even
get a better discount on a ship’s unsold cabin. But of course you
will not be able to choose the cabin that you like, whatever is left is
available.

2. Drive rather than fly
You could save a lot if you just drive to the nearest port in the city
rather than you fly. Nowadays there are more cruises than ever before
departing from “close-to home” ports such as Boston, New York, Bayonne(New Jersey), Philadelphia, Baltimore, Charleston, Jacksonville,Tampa, New Orleans, Mobile, Galveston, Los Angeles, Long Beach, San Francisco and Seattle.

3. Take a short cruise first
If you are a first-timer cruiser, it is better for you to take
short-cruise 3 to 4 days on the weekend. In this case, you will be
able to “test the water” before you jump-in to the real cruise. There is a good selection of ships sailing on short cruises to various destinations in the Caribbean, as well as along the Mexican Rivieraand to New England/Canada.

4. Beware of added charges
You have to be prepared for added charges when you are on a cruise.
Expenses such as playing in the casinos, alcoholic beverages to photos
snapped by the ship’s ubiquitous are not included in your cruise
fare.
So, travel-smart by preparing your budget in advance when you are
going on a cruise. If you must buy something, wait until the final day
of the cruise–most of the stores will throw a sale then.

5. From ship to shore- savings on excursions
Perhaps the largest additional cost are escorted shore excursions
offered in every port of call ranging in price from $25 per person for
a tour by motor coach to as much as $300 for helicopter flight-seeing.
For two couples, it is less expensive to hire a cab or rent a car for
a day than for each person to join an organized excursion. Also there
is no requirement to leave the ship when in port. Some passengers
prefer to relax on board and lounge by the pool as the ship is much
less crowded after most people have gone ashore. Shore excursions make
the most sense when few attractions are within walking distance and
local means of transportation are scarce.

Hope that this tip will be helpful for those first-timer cruiser. Bon
Voyage!!

Why Xaviera from the Isle of from Man of Visits Chamonix Village

October 30, 2008, 11:51 am

Chamonix village is a stunning place with the legendary Monte Bianco as well as tumbling glaciers. All of us enjoy going snowboarding or sometimes wandering around. I sometimes catch a plane from Fort Lauderdale and stay at a Chamonix chalet for the duration of my break.

We previously visited El Cid Marina Beach Hotel however it sometimes didn’t meet the standards of its marketing: El Cid Marina Beach is a Mediterranean-style resort located on the marina in Mazatlan’s Golden Zone, approximately 3 miles from downtown Mazatlan and 12 miles from the Mazatlan Airport. This resort offers both all-inclusive and room only plans. Amenities include the secluded beach, which is reached by a short water taxi shuttle, a whirlpool, mini-golf and two swimming pools featuring cascades, slides, grottos, underwater caves, a swim-up bar and a lagoon area for children. Guests have access to facilities at all four resorts in the El Cid complex, including a wide variety of restaurants, bars, entertainment, shops and activities. Golf, tennis and a health club are available nearby. The property features an international restaurant overlooking the marina and ocean, a poolside snack bar, a beach snack bar, a lobby bar and a swim-up bar. Additional hotel services include room service, playground, outdoor game area, babysitting, currency exchange, car rental and laundry/dry cleaning service. The optional all-inclusive plan includes accommodations, all meals at on-site restaurants (surcharge applies for specialty dishes), domestic and international drinks (house brands), access to the all-inclusive features at the nearby El Cid Castilla Beach hotel such as the disco, activities, theme dinners and Kids Club, and all taxes and gratuities. The all-inclusive with golf plan also includes unlimited green fees at El Cid Golf & Country Club (mandatory caddy not included).

On the other hand in Chamonix Haute Savoie France the luxury catered chalet is invariably fine. In addition eating out in our groups favorite cafe, Dragon City II Restaurant, scoffing sugar ‘n’ spice nuts is a treat. Chamonix Mont Blanc is a large enough destination to make sure that there is lots of things for the snowboarder to do. Including a cross country skiing track and a plethora of shops, Chamonix offers a combination of snowboarding, alpine charm and sightseeing which few resorts can beat.

Highpointing: It’s Not Just For Mountaineers

October 29, 2008, 7:53 pm

Mount Sunflower, Kansas. Ebright Azimuth, Delaware. Hawkeye Point, Iowa. Hoosier High Point, Indiana.

They may not have the name recognition of Mount McKinley (Denali), Mount Rainier, Mount Whitney, and Mount Hood. And they certainly are far, far easier to get to! But all these places have something in common. Each is the highest natural spot in its state.

Welcome to the world of Highpointing. Thousands of otherwise sane people have set out to drive, stroll, hike, or climb to the highest point in each of the 50 states. Many never plan to make it to the tougher highpoints like Denali (in Alaska), Rainier (in Washington) or Granite (in Montana), but they’ve discovered the fun in planning trips to locate the unusual “summits” of Sunflower (located on the flatlands of Kansas), Ebright Azimuth (yes, a suburban neighborhood can be the site of a state highpoint), Hawkeye Point (located at the end of a feeding trough on a farm in Iowa), and Lakewood Park (turn right at the restrooms, and stroll a short way along a path in a Florida park).

Of the 50 state highpoints, 14 are drive-ups. You drive right up to the highpoint, or so close to it you could toss a rock and hit it. Probably 8 more are extremely easy, involving a round-trip walk or hike of 30 minutes or less. In fact, only about 9 or 10 of the state highpoints involve more than a hike along a good trail. OK, some of these trails require long hikes that may gain a fair amount of elevation. Still, if you’re in good condition, and can walk for many hours, you can manage to check off about 40 state highpoints!

Why do people get into highpointing? It’s a great way to see our country. You’ll find highpoints in popular resort areas (Mount Mansfield at Stowe in Vermont), National Parks (Clingmans Dome, in Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee), and State Parks (Mauna Kea in Hawaii; Harney Peak in Custer State Park, South Dakota). But many highpoints are well off the beaten path, and will take you to beautiful and interesting parts of the country that you may have otherwise overlooked. Eagle Mountain is in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness of Minnesota. Oklahoma’s highpoint, Black Mesa, is near the very tip of the panhandle. Taum Sauk Mountain in Missouri is in a beautiful region of the Ozarks. Visit when the autumn leaves are at their peak, climb the nearby Lookout Tower, and prepare to be thrilled.

There are also many interesting things to see and do near the highpoints. Take in a concert by the Boston Symphony Orchestra or Boston Pops at Tanglewood in Massachusetts. Looking for something less cultured? How about the Boll Weevil Monument in Florida? Or the Wisconsin Concrete Park, featuring concrete sculptures of horses, soldiers, and heroes? If food and drink are more to your liking, don’t miss a tour of Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Factory in Vermont, Great Adirondack Brewing Company in New York, or stop in at the Hilltop Restaurant in L’Anse, Michigan for the most decadent (and largest) sweet rolls you can imagine.

Happy Highpointing, everyone!

Draaksbad Ranch in Lassen National Park

October 27, 2008, 3:50 pm

Draaksbad Ranch in Lassen National Park
Read Jetsetters Magazine at www.jetsettersmagazine.com
http://www.jetsettersmagazine.com/archive/jetezine/cabinweb/drakesbad/drakesbad.html

“There are no keys at Drakesbad,” says Billie, our hostess, while introducing us to the lay of the land. “We’re on the honor system.” This applies to everything from the sodas and beer in the ice buckets to the items in the concession store. Candy bars, sweatshirts, and books about the history of Drakesbad – you sign your name and room number on the roster and settle up upon your departure.

Not that you’d be in any hurry to leave Drakesbad Ranch. The guests that have visited year after year for generations know that Drakesbad is a place you’ll want to spend some time.

It’s not easy to get to Drakesbad, but that’s part of what makes it so worthwhile. Hidden in the southern side of California’s Lassen Volcanic National Park, the ranch is accessible only by a narrow country road that winds over three one lane bridges before losing its pavement before turning up a gravel track. The last few miles are unpaved, but easily navigable by careful drivers. Nope, no need for four wheel drive.

We arrived in time for lunch and dined on a buffet of fresh salads and deli fixings. Meals are included with the price of your stay. The staff understands that you might want to spend the day hiking in the surrounding splendor; they will pack a sack lunch for you if you sign up the night before. The kitchen is happy to accommodate any special dietary needs if you let them know before arrival.

After dining al fresco in the afternoon sunshine, we headed out to Devil’s Kitchen. The lodge sits on the edge ofLet’s Soak in Volcanic Hot Springs an expansive meadow frequented by dragonflies, mule deer, and red winged blackbirds, to name just a few of the remarkable denizens. We crossed the meadow to the forest and hiked up a moderately easy trail shared with horseback riders. (The ranch maintains a corral of horses and offers rides for all skill levels.) The two-mile hike ends in an array of steam vents and boiling mud pots. Deposits of sulfur coat the rocks and the air is filled with steam. Yes, there is a strong smell, described to us in advanced by two little boys on the trail: “It’s really stinky up there!” This is just one of a number of hiking destinations and the ranch even keeps a canoe at one of the nearby lakes – but you have to take advantage of that early in the season. The lakes are formed by snow melt and evaporate by the end of summer.

When we returned to the ranch, I poured myself a glass of cold lemonade that’s available all afternoon outside the dining room. Then we explored the possibilities the ranch offers for the most essential of vacation activities: doing NOTHING. A covered porch offers comfortable seating and a shady place to rest. There’s a hammock hanging above a circle of wild trillium. My favorite place was the bench swing on the edge of the meadow where the deer came to graze. And of course, there’s a pool for lazy soaking and sunbathing.

It’s not just any pool, though. It’s fed by the hot springs up the valley. For over 100 years people have taken comfort in these healing waters.

Accommodations at Drakesbad are rustic but very clean and comfortable. Our room, paneled in knotty pine, had its own half bath, but for showers, we used the bathhouse down by the pool. A few of the cabins have full baths, and seasoned Drakesbad guests were heard to suggest that taking such a cabin would be “copping out” on the Drakesbad way of life. Mind you, the same guests were heard to suggest that brushing your hair for dinner was also copping out.

Drakesbad is plenty kid friendly, with games and puzzles in the common lodge, a ping pong table, and a terrific tire swing in the shape of a pony. Even swimming pool toys are provided.

The dinner bell rings promptly at six, but there’s no hurry. Show up any time before seven and you’ll be fed, and fed well. We dined on tilapia and fresh vegetables, prepared with an Asian flair. Our hosts, Ed and Billie, made the rounds, welcoming the new guests and sharing pictures from previous years with the regulars. The youngster at our table bolted his food and rushed out to join the sunset horseback ride with the other kids while his mom enjoyed her meal at a more leisurely pace.

The kids returned as evening settled in around us. Dusk hours at Drakesbad are quiet but still social, with families playing board games in the lodge or sitting around the campfire. Drakesbad generously supplies the makings for s’Mores, but you’ll want to get there quick if there are a lot of kids around – any that weren’t on the ride had rushed to the campfire to build their own toasted marshmallow treats. The lights go out around 10 p.m., leaving you to the starlight and the glow of the kerosene lanterns. You can soak in the pool under the stars or curl up in the comfort of your room.

Gourmet Dining at Drakesbad – Ranch StyleBreakfast follows the same routine as dinner, with a bell to let you know that it’s time to fuel up for the day. We had ’scrambles’ just the way I like them (and I’m fussy about my eggs!). Ed poured hot chocolate for our young table mate with the flair of the finest of European maitre ‘ds. The sack lunches, ordered at dinner the night before were stacked on the stairs, ready for hikers and riders.

International Adventure Travel Ideas

October 25, 2008, 1:57 am

International adventure travel: Safaris, balloon tours, swimming with dolphins, bicycling down volcanos, trekking in the Himalayas, Walmart on Christmas Eve – the list is almost endless. This will not be a comprehensive listing of all the adventure opportunities out there. Instead, here is just enough to whet your appetite.

My Own International Adventure Travel

Long before hitchhiking across the country at sixteen-years-old, I had a taste for adventure. At fourteen, a friend and I bicycled 300 miles in a few days during one summer. At seventeen, I went international with my adventuring, hitchhiking from Michigan to half-way across Mexico. Over forty now, I no longer put out my thumb – not very often, anyhow – but I still love to travel.

More recently, my international adventure travel took me to Ecuador. While there I climbed to the furthest point from the center of the Earth. Everest is highest above sea level, but due to the Earth’s bulge at the equator, the peak of Mount Chimborazo, at 20,600 feet, is farther from from the center of our planet. The top is all snow, ice, and glaciers.

My guide didn’t speak English, and thought I was a mountaineer. I had once used an ice axe and crampons to go forty feet up a sledding hill, in Michigan. The rest of the story is on the website, but you can get information and a guide by talking to almost any hotel manager in Riobamba, Ecuador.

Go On A Jungle Book Safari

In southern Nepal, In the Royal Chitwan National Park, you can see tigers, leopards, rhinos, and sloth-bears. And where better to see them from than the back of a large elephant? The tours are lead by naturalists and park rangers. Stay in the comfortable Safari Lodge and take daily tours into the jungle.

Take A Mongolian Horseback Trek

Travel with one of the great nomadic and horse-based cultures of the world. The trips take you beyond tourist routes, and you can customize your trek to fit your schedule and budget. These tours are run from an office in Mongolia, and they provides experienced guides that are multi-lingual.

Go Rock Climbing In Rio

Want an outdoor adventure and city nightlife? Try a rock climbing tour in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. You’ll find routes for all skill levels in the Sugar Loaf, Urca, Corcovado and Pedra da Gavea mountains. Tours include bilingual instructors, equipment rentals, and transportation, and start at under $100 per person.

Swim With Dolphins In The Croatian Sea

Escape from the cold this winter, to the Cres-Loinj group of islands, which is known for it’s mild climate. Mali Loinj on the island of Loinj is known for its health resort, but recently, the area is becoming famous for the bottle-nosed dolphins that have made their homes in the clear and clean waters of the Cres-Loinj group of islands. Mingle with them by boat or in your swimsuit.

Climb Mount Kinabalu

Mt. Kinabalu (4101m) is the king of the Borneo sub-continent. It rises 3000 feet higher than other mountains in the area; far above the jungle. It attracts international climbers of all skill levels, who scramble, climb and trek in its unique jungle-alpine enviroment. Kinabalu is in a world heritage site that boasts a wide variety of plants and animals. Experienced guides will take you trekking, or take you to the top.
