Jaco Beach
February 26, 2009, 10:38 amWith only 2.5 hours (approx 117 km) drive from the capitol, San Jos©, Jac beach or playa Jac is one of the most visited beaches in Costa Rica.
The long sandy beach has a shape and ocean floor that promotes big waves, very much to the delight of most surfers visiting Costa Rica.
The most common route to take when going from San Jos© down to Jac is to drive via Alajuela, continue to Atenas and further down the dark green slopes of the west side of Costa Rica until reaching San Mateo. Continue from there to Orotina and take highway 34 straight down to Jac.
Also make sure to peek through the car windows when passing el rio tarcoles (tarcoles river) where you can see the natural habitat of the enormous crocodiles of the Tarcoles River and the mangroves.
The Beach
————-
The playa is a bit over 3km in length from one end to the other. It makes a nice walk and if your legs give up on you, the local taxis will be more then happy to help you out. You can also rent cars and bikes.
For reading, keep your eyes open and look for Jac News, a monthly English language publication.
The surf is best in the rainy season from May to November, but depending on what you crave in size of waves; Jac really can offer an all year surfing experience.
Sights of Jac
——————
Jac is really the kind of place where doers go. Not to much to see locally. Things you can do are rent kayaks, go deep sea fishing or take a sunset cruise. Horse riding is also very popular and most hotels can arrange that for you.
The latest craze to emerge in Jaco is paragliding and you can even go with a boat-plane to private beaches.
Places to go when in Jac
——————————
You can go with local tours to Carara National Park, La Catarata (waterfalls) and Tarcoles crocodile tours. You should also plan for a visit to playa Hermosa south of Jac where you can take the canopy tour.
Some places to sleep in Jac are, Jac Fiesta, Club del Mar, Copacabana, Best Western Jac Beach Resort and Apartotel Gaviotas.
Eating
——–
As Jac is a quite big beach and a lot of tourism, you’ll find a lot of places serving food. Visit Bananas, Chatty Cathy’s, Emily’s to the north. La Fragata with pasta and fish. La Hacienda with mid priced snacks and La Ostra with fish as a specialty.
Bars & Nightclubs
———————–
They come and go on almost a day to day basis. Two of the best are Central and Los Tucanes.
Shopping as what you expect on a tourist beach and if you run out of money, then visit Banco Nacional in the centre of town.
Finally, a warning
———————-
Jac has a bit too strong surf to really be a good place for small kids. Big waves, rip tides and under currents can be dangerous for someone young or unaccustomed to the sea.
And as always, when dealing the sea, be careful. The tide in Costa Rica changes the sea level many meters and can pull anyone out into the open sea.
Steven always spends his vacations in Costa Rica. His favourite places are the beaches. More about Jaco Beach

Four Homemade Mother’s Day Cards to Make
February 23, 2009, 4:08 amThere is nothing as special or personal as a homemade Mother’s
Day card. Surprise your friends and family with your handmade
creations. Here are some ideas to get you started.
Materials:
Four blank greeting cards (available at craft stores),
scrapbooking paper with floral pattern, coordinating solid piece
of scrapbooking paper, creme or white colored cardstock
(whichever matches other papers best), paper cutter, scissors,
glue stick, computer, printer, sewing machine.
Card #1:
For this card you will need a floral piece of scrapbooking paper,
a coordinating piece of solid colored scrapbooking paper, and a
piece of white or creme colored cardstock. Cut a piece of the
solid colored paper to fit the front of the greeting card and
glue it in place. Cut an approximately 2-inch strip of the
floral paper and glue on lefthand side of card as a border. Use
your sewing machine to stitch* along the righthand side of the
floral border and around the outside edge of the card. Cut a
large square out of creme colored or white card stock and glue to
the center of the card. Type “Happy Mother’s Day” on your
computer and print out on white or creme colored cardstock. Cut
out the phrase (narrow strip) and glue to the bottom of the
square in the center of the card. Choose a flower from the floral
paper and trim to fit in the center of the square on the front of
the card. Glue in place.
* Stitching tips: If you have never used your sewing machine to
make cards, it is easy! Just sew on the paper like you would on
fabric. You might want to reserve a needle just for paper so you
don’t dull the needle for your fabric projects. There are two
ways you can include stitching in your card making projects. You
can either stitch directly on the card, or you can stitch on a
separate piece of paper and then glue that piece to the card
(then the stitching won’t show through the card).
Card #2:
This Mother’s Day card is quick and easy. Cut a piece of the
solid colored scrapbooking paper to fit three-quarters of the
front of the card. Carefully tear along the righthand edge of the
paper and glue the paper in place. Next cut a piece of floral
paper to fit half of the front of the card. Carefully tear along
the righthand edge of the paper and glue on top of the solid
colored piece of paper. Type “Happy Mother’s Day” on your
computer and print it on white or cream colored paper. Mat the
cut-out phrase first on a piece of the solid colored paper, then
glue to front of card. Stitch around the outside of the card if
you wish, but it isn’t necessary.
Card #3:
This card will open horizontally. Cut three approximately 3-inch
strips of paper to fit width of card: two floral and one solid
colored. Tear bottom edges of each piece. Beginning at top of
card overlap the three pieces with floral paper first and glue in
place. Cut a large square from the cream or white colored paper
and glue it in the center of the card. Cut a slightly smaller
square of solid colored paper and glue in center of cream colored
piece. Type “Happy Mother’s Day” on your computer. Print on cream
or white colored paper, trim, and glue in the center of solid
colored square. Stitch around the edge of the card, if you wish.
Card #4:
This card will open horizontally. Tear a rectangle from the
solid colored paper and glue near top of card. Type “Happy
Mother’s Day” on your computer and print on white or creme
colored paper. Trim and glue to center of solid colored paper.
Tear another piece of solid colored paper (larger than first) to
glue across the bottom of the card. Cut a rectangle from floral paper
and glue to center of bottom piece of solid colored paper.
If you wish you can accent edges of floral rectangle with
coordinating eyelets.
Notes: – The terms “card stock” and “paper” are used
interchangably here, but it is up to you which kind of paper you
use, depending on the look you are trying to achieve – A sewing
machine isn’t necessary for this project, it is just a nice added
touch – You don’t have to use your computer for this project, you
can handwrite the words if you wish.

Sheds Need Not Be Too Costly if You Purchase On-line and Take Advantage of the Big Selection
February 20, 2009, 4:12 amThere are a great deal of sound reasons why you would require a garden shed and as luck would have it there are garden sheds to suit just about every need. Cheap sheds may be bought just about everyplace but what you will see is the price will change tremendously. You shouldn’t have to forego the garden shed you want because it is too overpriced though. A shed is something you purchase once and use for years and when you take a look on-line you can find garden sheds at some silly prices. I do not mean cheap and silly as in quality but as in monetary value. You may find you can have the shed you need for the cost of the one you were about to settle for a lot cheaper and if you own a garden that you tend to every day you will almost likely need to look into a wooden garden shed as a place to place the fertilizer, tools and water hose and so forth.
Looking after your garden tools and making them well accessible is a real good idea. You can find garden sheds online that are the same sheds you’d buy in the store. As A Matter Of Fact, you can go to the garden store and shop even spot them to see if it is what you require then go on-line and purchase it for a lot lower price. The difference in price is sizeable!

Christmas Season Versus Holiday Season
February 19, 2009, 8:39 amIn the United States, the month of December is the Christmas Season, not the Holiday Season. To the best of my knowledge there is only one holiday in December recognized by our government. December 25 was made a legal holiday in order to celebrate the birth of Christ. There are no other legal holidays during the month of December. Chanukah, Hannukah, or Hanukah is a celebration and, some say, a Jewish Holiday but it is not a legal holiday. Kwanza is a celebration and not a legal holiday. Christmas Eve is not a day and New Years Eve is not a day. We don’t call the month of May, the Holiday Season, even though that’s when Memorial Day is celebrated. On Martin Luther King Day we don’t have holiday parades, we have Martin Luther King Day parades. We don’t say happy holiday on the Fourth Of July, we say Happy Independence day or Happy Fourth Of July. Why then, do some people insist that we say happy holiday and holiday season when we are celebrating Christmas?
I’ll tell you why. It is because the organized religion of atheism (Yes atheism, is an organized religion, it is a religion of non belief.) is waging war against Christianity as the first battle in a war against all other religions. If they can defeat Christianity in this country of Christians, then they can defeat all religions that believe in a God or higher power.
I am a Christian. I don’t, however, know for sure, if Christ is the son of God or if he was a teacher or what. I do know, that I believe in the teachings ascribed to him. I do know, that even though we are humans and therefore can not and do not always follow all of those teachings, that if we all tried to live by those teachings of love and kindness, the whole world would be a better place. I also know that, I want Christ to be the Son of God because then it would mean that God did and does care about us and that there may very well be a Heaven.
I disagree with the director of special projects for the American Family Association when he says, “Christmas is not a holiday” and that calling Christmas a holiday “devalues our nation’s most holy day.” Christmas is a holiday. In fact, I consider Christmas and the Fourth Of July to be this country’s two most important and happiest holidays. The Fourth Of July celebrates the birth of our nation and Christmas celebrates the birth of Christ. Workers are given Christmas Day off with pay, school children are given several days off for Christmas vacation. Offices hold Christmas parties. Families get together, listen to Christmas music, stuff themselves with food and give each other gifts. Marines collect “Toys For Tots”. The Salvation Army puts out it’s kettles and collects money which is used to help needy people all year long. Many family members who have been feuding all year round get together and forgive each other. Christmas is a holiday of love and forgiveness.
Christmas is a holiday that everyone, not just Christians, should celebrate. Almost no one denies that Christ did exist at one time. The controversy is, whether or not he is the son of God. Putting that controversy aside, Christ preached or taught “peace on earth and goodwill towards men”. If people bemoan the fact that John Lennon died because he was a fighter for peace, how can they not celebrate the fact that Christ was born? Christ was arguably the original teacher of peace, forgiveness and goodness. He lived and died promoting peace. He not only promoted peace, he lived peace. He not only taught forgiveness, he lived forgiveness. Christ set an example that has lived for over two thousand years. If Martin Luther King can have a holiday, if Presidents, Veterans, labor and others can have their own holidays, why shouldn’t Christ have a holiday.
A note to other religions: You should support Christmas. If you allow the atheists to kill off Christmas, it could be your religion that they go after next. There is a war being fought today. I’m not talking about the war in Iraq. I’m talking about the war against religion being brought by atheists and certain hard line fanatics on the far left. Right now, they are winning the war because religious groups are not fighting back in a cohesive manner. If religious groups don’t help each other, someday they will all cease to exist and the United States will become another Soviet Union. Taking away our right to participate in religion and to celebrate our religion is a first step in taking away our other freedoms.
One of the main reasons that the United States was able to become so great is that, contrary to what the atheists and some others tell you, we are not a secular country. Our whole method of government and our laws come in large part from our forefathers religious beliefs.
It may not seem so, but I am not agaisnt all atheists. They have a right to believe in non belief and I support that right. I am just against the activists that are trying to force their non beliefs down my throat. I am willing to leave them alone if they are willing to leave me and mine alone. The problem is that they won’t leave us alone. They don’t want to allow us to believe as we wish. They want us to believe as they do. They don’t believe in Christmas so they want to take Christmas away from us.
One final note to all you major retailers who want to sell me gifts for me to give as Christmas presents, if you won’t acknowledge the Christmas Season in your advertising and in your stores, then don’t expect me to shop in your stores. If you insist in saying holiday season and happy holidays instead of Christmas Season and Merry Christmas, then I will insist in not dealing with you. For the time being, at least, you are free to do as you wish and I’m free do as I wish. My wish is to boycott you, not only during the Christmas Season but for a long time to come. Heck, I’m still boycotting everything French and I’ve been boycotting Jane Fonda and Shirley MacLaine since the Vietnam War.
