Heads-Up Poker Tips
October 26, 2009, 11:01 amPoker games often come down to two players, either at the end of a tournament and when all the other online poker players fold leaving two contenders to battle it out. Here are some tips for heads-up play:
* Use position to take advantage of your opponent when you play poker online. When you are second to act, you can win more with good hands and lose less with bad hands. You are last to act half the time, so use it to get the most information and power out of your hand.
* Be aggressive. Most of the time your opponent will not have a strong hand pre-flop or afterwards. Raise with any strong cards because by raising you gain fold equity or perhaps will win a bigger pot if called.
* Practice pot control by getting as many chips into the pot when you believe your hand is best, and limit the chips you add to the pot when your hand is weak. When you have a stealth hand, like a small pocket pair that completes to set, slow play with small bets to keep you opponent betting into the pot too.
* Study your opponent’s moves and hand range. Try to recognize which hands your opponent raises or checks. Does your opponent use slow play tactics or raise with any marginal hand? Can you force a fold with an aggressive bet?
* Adapt your usual play to your opponent’s style. Raise to a tight player and counter loose play with re-raises when you have any strong cards.
* Be willing to fold a hand you know can be beat. Move on to the next hand rather than put more chips into the pot with a vulnerable hand.
* Look for times to bluff – a flop with suited or paired cards – especially when you are last to act.
* Mix up your play so you seem unpredictable and hard to read. Get caught bluffing, fold to a raise, then re-raise next time.

The Drawbacks of the Ace
October 5, 2009, 11:17 amWhen you start to read up on Texas Holdem poker you are told over and over how important aces are to making a valuable poker hand. Almost every poker site out there stresses that the Ace is the one card that can make you a success at the table. It is all about getting and holding onto this valuable card. This overemphasis on the Ace leads to some serious problems when new players do not realize the dark side of the Ace situation. The dark side of the Ace is that it is not the only card that you need. You actually need more cards to make a poker hand. One card is not a hand by any means, no matter how valuable that one card happens to be. Many new players fall into this Ace trap and will play a hand with an Ace in their pocket, no matter what the other card is. I cannot stress enough that this is not a good idea. Don’t play your pocket cards if you just have an Ace and an unsuited low card in your card. Trust me; it will not work out to your benefit later down the line. Do you really want to go all the way to the showdown with a single valuable card?

Poker Wisdom: Making Mistakes
July 21, 2009, 12:32 pmonline poker author and winner Lou Krieger offers this gem of advice that sums up a winner’s approach: “Most of the money you’ll win at jeux de casino comes not from the brilliance of your own play, but from the ineptitude of your opponents.”
Online Poker players win pots because their opponents make mistakes. The losers fail to read the board and assess their real strength of their hands. They refuse to release their trips when the board straightens or flushes up. They can’t believe that Aces can get cracked or that a straight could be beat by a higher one. They cling to hope and call off their chips to the river.
Look for habitual mistakes made by other players at the table, and be sure you have a sound reason for every decision you make. There should be a strategy behind every hand you play and be alert for opportunities when other players will make mistakes, like falling into a slow play trap.
You also must continually assess your own play and be aware of any of your own weaknesses. Know when you are on tilt, and take a break. Avoid the shark who plays like a loose maniac and taunts the table. Don’t fall in love with your hand no matter how good it might look if it can be beat. Recognize that a re-raise at the river means you’re probably beat if you’re not holding the absolute nuts.

Waiting for Your Cards in no Limit
April 15, 2009, 4:16 pmNothing is more frustrating than a dry run of online poker cards. After getting hands at the casino like 8-3 and 5-2 off suited all night, a Q-3 suited can look like pocket Aces. Patience is the key in situations like this, because all that you need to do is survive until the cards start going your way. I know it sucks to sit out of the action when you came to play, but remember-it’s the player who wins the tournament is the one who wins at the end of the game, not at the beginning. Here are a few ways to sick around until the end.
Be patient. If you get cold poker cards all night, don’t start playing marginal hands unless you plan on stealing some pots. Don’t throw your money away trying to get to the river with a J-8 suited.
Play conservatively but don’t be afraid to steal a few pots. If you want to survive to the end without any playable cards, you’re going to want to steal a few pots, just make sure that you know who it is that you’re bluffing. Wait until a tight player is in the blind position and raise him past his playing threshold. One pot steal per round will keep you even all night.

Zynga the First for Mobile Poker? RedKing Thinks Not
January 15, 2009, 11:08 am
There have been several reports this week of online gaming mogul Zynga being the first to offer live poker on a mobile device. And while the game may catch on pretty quickly as the free online poker alternative for mobile devices they’re a week late for claiming the status of first.
Redkings poker has already released an application for mobile devices along with a compatibility list of phones that will run the application.
The difference is that Zynga is extremely prevalent on the gigantic social networking sites MySpace and Facebook which may be the reason RedKings flew under the radar. Zynga’s “Free Poker” is also a non-cash based application while players under the RedKing logo can bet real money at the virtual tables.
Perhaps the most defining difference is the fact that the Zynga version is a “first” for the popular iPhone.
It makes sense that several US phone providers don’t offer applications such as RedKing for real money poker as the UIGEA, but hopefully sooner rather than later Congress will get something done about that and the citizens of the US can join in the mobile gambling craze that’s sure to take hold in this technologically driven market.
The app is currently being sold in an upgraded form for 9.99 but iPhone users can try the app for free in a limited form.

Making an Official Bet
October 1, 2008, 2:37 pm
There is some debate among poker players, particularly beginning poker players, about when a bet becomes official. Does the bet become official when you physically place your chips in the pot, or does it become official when you say aloud the betting action you are going to take. Quite simply, your bet is considered official at the earliest sign you make to signify how you are going to bet. For example, if you say that you are going to raise a bet, but then only put in enough chips to call, you will have to add additional chips so that you actually raise. Because your verbal indication was stated first, that is your official bet. Once you state how you are going to bet, you are not allowed to deviate from it.
The distinction of a bet as official or not is mainly used to keep players from trying to influence the game out of turn. A possible scenario is if a player announces that they are going to raise a bet before their turn, but when the play gets to them, decides simply to call. The rules of official betting make it so that the player is required to raise if that is what they state they are going to do. The other players at the table often base their game play off of the verbal indications of other players. If a player was allowed to change their actions after announcing an intended course, all of the other players’ strategies would suffer.
In order to avoid a difficult situation where you are tied to making an unwise bet, you should simply keep your intended betting strategy to yourself. If you do not make an announcement out of turn, you will be held only to the actions you take when the play comes to you.

Poker as a Psychotherapy
August 14, 2008, 2:16 pm
So you sleep through the alarm clock and then try to rush out the door meanwhile managing to get in a fight with your significant other. When you finally make it outside, the neighbor’s dog is doing its business right on the side of your car, and while you try to shoo it away your morning cup of coffee spills everywhere. We’ve all been there, one of those mornings when nothing seems to be going your way. When you get home at the end of the day there seems to be little that you want to do besides mope around, feeling sorry for yourself.
Well, let me suggest something new to try. How about a game of online poker – I promise you, it will work like therapy. You will become so engrossed with the game, all the unlucky events of you day will be forgotten. Also, what can be more convenient than playing right at home? You can sit in your favorite chair, munch on your favorite snack and listen to your favorite music- you get my gist. The more involved you get in the game, the faster you will let go of all your frustrations. Online poker is fun, exciting, and best of all it’s like having a free therapy session in the comfort of your own home!

4th of July in the Inland Empire
July 7, 2008, 5:14 pmOne of the few bright entertainment spots for the Inland Empire comes in the form of the 4th of July fireworks options. The downside, of course, is that this only happens once a year but I digress. There are several great places to see a pretty darn good firework show around this area. These places are fairly cheap and easy to find. They can also be seen from several points around the inland empire.
One of the best around is the Redlands 4th of July fireworks show. It’s held at the University of Redlands stadium and features some of the very best fireworks and a great pre-game show leading up to the fireworks. This usually consists of jets flying across the field and people parachuting down into the stadium. A very entertaining show and well worth the $5 or so admission price. Another great place to see fireworks is to watch them go off on top of Mt. Rubidoux near Riverside. The best thing to do is part down at the base of this glorified hill and watch them from the field. Be sure to bring blankets and food.
Other great places to go include Grand Terrace, Highland, and in you know someone that lives nearby, the Redlands Country club has a pretty great fireworks display. Not to mention the show in Yucaipa which is also no slouch. It would be great if a local web design company like this designed and developed a website that provided more information about each of these venues and what to expect out of your 4th of July plans each year.
